Trainers' Training on Food Sov in Manila
Last 31 July to 02 August 2006, the People's Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS), Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP), and Ibon Foundation sponsored the Trainer's Training on Food Sovereignty which was held at the UCCP Shalom Center in Malate, Manila, Philippines.
The 3-day activity was attended by 20 individuals from 15 organisations, all working on different issues related to food sovereignty such as safe food, indigenous peoples rights, dalits rights, rights of farmers and agricultural workers, women's rights, land rights and genuine agrarian reform, trade, and youth.
The training was composed of 3 modules. The first module, discussed by Antonio Tujan of IBON/APRN (Philippines), focused on the concept of food sovereignty, as well as its relation to social transformation and struggle, and to agriculture and food production.
The second module, discussed by Azra Sayeed of Roots for Equity (Pakistan), included concepts related to food sovereignty as a policy framework, as well as the components of the food sovereignty platform.
The last module, discussed by Gilbert Sape of PAN AP (Malaysia), focused on the policy advocacy aspect of food sovereignty, and how this can be used in the local, national and international arenas. The discussion also talked about the different bodies and institutions that can be targetted for policy advocacy.
The training was a success since the participants were able to enrich their knowledge not just on the concepts of food sovereignty, but were also able to enhance their skills on how they can do advocacy work in relation to their work on food sovereignty. The participants were also able to listen and to have dynamic discussions with other individuals from different countries, thereby enriching their knowledge about the current issues related to food sovereignty.
The training hopes to provide the participants with knowledge for them to conduct similar training activities in their respective communities and countries.
