Food Sovereignty Training in Rio was a Success

Rio De Janeiro was the venue for the third Trainers' Training on Food Sovereignty. The first two trainings were held in India and the Philippines. The training in Rio de Janeiro, which was attended by 16 participants from organisations coming from different regions (Latin America, North America, Africa and Asia), was held last November 04-06, 2006 at the Acros Rio Palace Hotel in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

This event was organised by the People's Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS), Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP), Ibon Foundation, and RAP AL (Pesticide Action Network Latin America).

The 3-day activity was attended individuals from organisations working on different issues related to food sovereignty such as safe food, indigenous peoples rights, rights of farmers and agricultural workers, women's rights, consumers' rights, land rights and genuine agrarian reform, and trade.

The training was composed of 3 modules. The first module, discussed by Antonio Tujan of IBON/APRN (Philippines), focused on hunger, food security and food sovereignty.

The second module, discussed by Sarojeni Rengam of PAN AP (Malaysia), included concepts related to food sovereignty as a policy framework, as well as the components of the food sovereignty platform. Part of the same module is a discussion on pesticide policy, which was discussed by Elsa Nivia of RAPAL.

The last module, discussed by Gilbert Sape of PAN AP (Malaysia), focused on the policy advocacy aspect of food sovereignty, and how this can be used in the local, national and international arenas. The discussion also talked about the different bodies and institutions that can be targetted for policy advocacy.

The Spanish translation of the Modules on Food Sovereignty was likewise launched during this activity.

For the participants, the training was very helpful in making them understand the basic concepts of food sovereignty. The training was also a venue for them to exchange ideas on how they could push for the food sovereignty advocacy in their own countries. The participants were also able to listen and to have dynamic discussions with other individuals from different countries, thereby enriching their knowledge about the current issues related to food sovereignty.
