More than 14 peasants died. Hundreds were wounded.
This was the gruesome scenario in Nandigram, West Bengal in India on March 14, 2007. This massacre was reportedly committed by the 4,000-member police force under the "Operation Nandigram" which was formed to suppress the growing protest of the Nandigram farming communities who are fighting against the land acquisition for the proposed establishment of the US$ 4.2 billion mega-Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

We the members of the Task Force on Food Sovereignty and Ecological Agriculture of the Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP), which is having its 3rd meeting in Penang, Malaysia (March 14 and 15, 2007) strongly condemn the West Bengal government led by the C.P.I. (M) for the massacre of more than 20 peasants from Nandigram, East Midnapore District in West Bengal.

The stalled DOHA Development Round, which will determine the course of the global agricultural trade, is set to resume this year. If the United States, the European Union and WTO head Pascal Lamy will have their way, millions of impoverished farmers and food consumers can expect the worst: an unfair trade system that will completely flood the markets with subsidized agricultural imports from developed countries and displacing local production in developing countries, all in the name of the so-called “free trade”.

A day long International Peoples Tribunal was organised by the joint initiative of above mass organisations and Civil Society organisations at the historic Calcutta University Institute Hall. In this tribunal about 5000 peasants were present from Singur, Nandigram, Haripur and other adjacent places of West Bengal.
