The People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS) strongly supports the struggle of small farmers in India for land and food sovereignty by resisting the National Food Security Act.
The Indian National Food Security Act was signed into law in 12 September 2013. The law aims to provide subsidized food grains to approximately two thirds of India’s 1.2 billion people. The law was further highlighted internationally during the 9th World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Meeting in Bali, Indonesia last December 2013 where India led the G-33 in pushing the proposal on food stockholdings for purposes of food security. According to them, the law will allow the government of India to continue and even increase the procurement of wheat and rice at a minimum support price from low income food producers. The proposal seeks the removal of the WTO’s limits on subsidies, as well as in increasing the amount of support and protection of domestic agriculture from the impacts of the global food crisis and trade liberalization.
