Global Peasant Coordination pushed in Mexico

Written by April Porteria Saturday, 26 April 2014 13:05

Mexico City, Mexico - Leading peasant networks in Asia, Africa and Latin America and Caribbean (LAC)  gathered last April 17 in Mexico City to agree on a continuing coordination towards the formation of a Global Peasant Coordination.  The meeting aimed at creating a common platform that will pull collaborative regional actions in the global level and form a strengthened coordination mechanism among regional and sub-regional farmers’ networks advancing the peasants’ interest and advocacy for food sovereignty amidst the struggles on hunger and poverty crises.

Sylvia Mallari of Asian Peasant Coalition (APC) reiterated that the right to food and access to land that should take in shape were struggles that required strengthening peasant movement and building self-sustaining productive peasant and rural communities. She identified particular areas in agriculture and rural development which needed strengthening including building farmer organizations, capacity building of communities, peasant women leaders and youth development.
