World Food(less) Day Statement

World food(less) day is upon us again and it is an opportunity to assess the state of global food security, and the continued lack of it. Since the 2008 food price crisis, there has been heightened awareness of the vulnerability of the world food situation. However, little progress has been made to genuinely and decisively address this situation. Global poverty and hunger indicators point to a worsening state of global hunger, with its causes being perpetuated rather than addressed. While one billion people are hungry, over half a billion people are obese. This fact belies the commonly promoted line that we need more intensive food production to address global hunger – instead we must look into the production, ownership, control and distribution of food for the benefit of vulnerable and poor populations.

Peasant grassroots organizations, civil society organisations and multi-sectoral platforms for food sovereignty are mobilizing and demanding that their voices be heard and their rights respected.
